On the Winter Solstice in December, 2007, Kurt Hoelting began a year-long experiment in car free living, staying within a 62 mile (100 km) radius of his home on Whidbey Island. The circle that defines Kurt's year centers on his house in the Maxwelton Valley of Whidbey Island, and passes directly over the summits of Mt. Olympus, Mt. Baker and Glacier Peak. It just touches the southern tip of Puget Sound and also takes in the San Juan Islands at the northern end of the Puget Sound Basin. This blog is Kurt's account of his Circling Home year, which will continue until Winter Solstice in 2008.
About Me
Kurt Hoelting
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, graduating from the University of Washington and Harvard Divinity School. I have worked as a clergyman, commercial fisherman in Alaska, a wilderness guide and a meditation teacher. I lead a migratory lifestyle with winters in Puget Sound and summers in Alaska.
In 1994 I founded Inside Passages, a sea kayaking outfitter-guide business in Alaska that combines my love for wilderness exploration, conservation, and contemplative practice. Inside Passages offers trips and retreats for a broad spectrum of leaders in environmental policy, health care, business, religion and philanthropy, utilizing contemplative practice and immersion in the wild to clarify our vision, foster personal resilience, and enhance our commitment to ecological sustainability .
I live on Whidbey Island with my wife Sally, and am the father of two children, Kristin and Alex.
